J.M. Sorrels, father of Sam and Vernon, was the first of the family to arrive in Poteau. J. M. Owned a grocery store around the turn of the century.
Sam and Vernon were the most important people of the Sorrels family in Poteau. Sam Sorrels married Hazel Fincher and had two sons, J. Sam Sorrels and John David Sorrels. Hazel's father, D. L. Fincher was a Poteau Merchant. Sam was a teacher in his early days and due to the small salaries of teachers, he left the field for other businesses. He was occupied in real estate, and in 1921 he and his brother, Vernon, bought a Ford agency in spiro. This later led to their ownership of the Ford Motor Company in Poteau. Later, the two men sold the automobile business and went into coal mining south of Poteau. They abandoned this business in 1966 when the mining business was no longer needed. Other businesses of these brothers were numerous.
What year did J.M. Sorrels arrive, what was the name of his store, and where was it located?
What other information exists about Sam and Vernon Sorrels? What all businesses did they own? What major impacts on Poteau did they have?
