Poteau Switch - Between 1897 and 1900 This is one of the earliest photographs of Poteau that exists, and can be found in the old Lowery Hotel. Starting on the left, this first 2-story building housed both the J. E. Forbes drugstore and the Masonic hall. The drugstore and all of fixtures that were inside were sold around 1910-1915 to a company in New England. The next store is a grocery store, followed by the Metropolitan Hotel. The Metropolitan was the smallest hotel in Poteau during this time. The largest hotel was the Fleener Hotel, followed by the Poteau Hotel. Of interest in this photograph is also the Baptist Church in the background. This photograph would have been taken shortly after it was constructed. The other large building at the end was a boarding house and resturaunt. One final note to point out in this photograph is the old railroad bed located at the bottom right of the photo. This photograph shows the area between Green and College Avenues.

I have a few more that I'd like to share when time permits. I wish I could find more photos like this though. I've been hunting for one of Welch's store and Fleener's hotel for awhile now, but still no luck. I have all the information, and I can make an educated guess, but still, I wish I knew what they really looked like.
Thanks for taking a look!
